Orange Shirt Day began with Phyllis Webstad’s heartbreaking story—given a new orange shirt by her grandmother for her first day at residential school, she was stripped of it upon arrival. Ever since, the Orange Shirt has symbolized resilience and the call to ensure such history never repeats.
